At present we are able to offer 3 Standard Courses designed to start you off in the world of Historical European Martial Arts. The courses run on Saturdays and are run back to back allowing you to progress throughout the day.

Course 1: Beginners Guide to Longsword
Duration: 2 Hours
Time: Saturdays 09:00-11:00
Booking: Essential
Price: £50

This course is designed to teach you the basics of how to wield a sword. The Longsword is an excellent weapon to start with as the skill necessary to wield it can be easily transferred to smaller weapons such as the single-hand sword.

In this class we will cover:

The 8 basic types of cut

Basic Thrusts

Blocks for the above

Basic Sword Drills

Basic Footwork

Partner Work

This lesson is taught with top of the range Plastic Sword Simulators which handle exactly like real swords but are much safer. Those people wishing to progress their skills further can now move on to Course number 2.

Course 2: Beginners Guide to “Steel” Longsword
Duration: 2 Hours
Time: Saturdays 11:30-13:30
Booking: Essential
Price £25 (must be booked in conjunction with Course number 1)

The stakes are now raised as we will be using steel swords. This course has been designed to give you the feel of cold steel in your hands and to appreciate how versatile a weapon the sword actually is. The course follows on directly from Course number 1 as you will need the skills that you have already been taught.

In this class we will cover:

Basic construction of the sword

Basic Cuts

Basic Thrusts

Basic Blocks

Flow Drills

Off-Line Movements

Binding

This course is taught with re-enactment quality swords with 3mm safety edges. All protective equipment such as gloves and helmets are provided.

Course 3: Beginners Guide to Fighting with the Longsword
Duration: 2 Hours
Time: Saturdays 14:00-16:00
Booking: Essential
Price: £25 (must be booked in conjunction with Course number 1 & 2)

So far you have been shown how to wield a sword. We are now going to show you how to fight with it. It is one thing to know how to cut or thrust but it is a completely different thing knowing when to do it.

In this class we will cover:

Counter-strikes

Distance

Timing

Slow Sparring

Flow Drills

The 5 “Secret” Strikes

This class is taught with a choice of steel or plastic swords.

Equipment:
Equipment is provided for all of the above courses.

Clothing:
We recommend that you wear loose fitting sports clothes (no jeans!) and trainers.

Fitness:
The classes cater for most fitness levels and you have the option to work at your own pace. Please note however that to get the most out of our courses we would expect you to be at a certain level of fitness.

Refreshments:
Bottled water is available on site. Our premises are 5 minutes walk from local shops (including SPAR).
